Why Becoming a Certified B Corporation Matters to Me
When I created Meraki Hair Wellness, I knew I wanted to build more than a beauty brand.
I wanted to build a company with standards. A company that could deliver high-performance hair wellness while being thoughtful about ingredients, sourcing, people and impact. A company that understood beauty as both an experience and a responsibility.
That is why becoming a Certified B Corporation matters so much to me.
The certification is meaningful, but the logo is not the destination. It represents a larger decision about how Meraki will grow. We are not building a business that considers impact only when it is convenient or marketable. We are building those considerations into the identity of the company.
Beauty is a powerful industry. It shapes culture, influences purchasing behavior and touches people through products they use every day. That reach creates opportunity, but it also creates responsibility. A beautiful package and a compelling story are not enough. I believe brands should be willing to examine what they make, how they operate and what their growth contributes to the world around them.
For Meraki, that commitment is expressed through the Meraki Impact Standard™: B Corporation and Public Benefit Company accountability, Ingredient Integrity, High-Performance Hair Wellness, Crystal-Infused Innovation, Responsible Sourcing, and Testing and Safety.
Those principles give us a framework for decision-making. They remind us that performance matters. Ingredient choices matter. The way materials are sourced matters. Testing matters. The promises we make to consumers matter.
They also remind us that impact is not a finished achievement.
Certification does not mean a company is perfect. Meraki is still evolving, reformulating and strengthening the systems that will support its next chapter. To me, accountability means being willing to measure, learn and improve rather than presenting responsibility as something a brand completes once and places on a shelf.
That approach is personal for me as a founder.
I am building Meraki at the intersection of beauty, wellness, entrepreneurship and advocacy. I have seen how deeply beauty products are woven into women’s lives, particularly the lives of Black women. I have also seen the gaps between what consumers assume, what brands communicate and what policies require.
Those experiences shaped my expectations. I want Meraki to demonstrate that a beauty company can pursue performance and purpose at the same time. I do not believe women should have to choose between products that work and brands that reflect their values. I do not believe responsibility should be reserved for niche companies or treated as an optional trend.
I believe it belongs in the future of beauty.
Becoming a Certified B Corporation also matters because of the legacy I want to create. I want to build something my daughter can look at and understand that success is not only measured by revenue, visibility or retail doors. It is also measured by the integrity of the decisions made along the way.
Meraki is a business, and I want it to grow. I want it to reach more women, enter meaningful retail partnerships and become a recognized leader in hair wellness. But I want that growth to remain connected to the values that inspired the company in the first place.
The B Corp logo on our brand is a public signal of that intention. Behind it is the quieter, ongoing work of building responsibly—decision by decision, product by product and year by year.
That is the company I intend to lead.
And that is why this certification means far more to me than a mark on the packaging.
